News media scrambles to shoot down HBO's “The Newsroom”
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
6/25/2012 8:42 PM Matt Rock - Key figures from CNN, Fox, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, and a number of other major American news outlets held a summit today in Manhattan with the hopes of finding a solution to a major, recently-developed threat that might challenge not only the way they conduct their business, but the very existence of their companies... a new HBO program created by Aaron Sorkin, called “The Newsroom.”

“We all tried to derail the show with snotty, cynical `reviews' from our critics, but now that people have had a chance to watch it, and realize that it's actually a really great show, well, we're all in quite a bit of trouble,” said Fox News President and Alfred Hitchcock lookalike contest winner ten years standing, Roger Ailes. “The more people watch this, the more dangerous it becomes for us. If our viewers realized we've been phoning it in this past decade or so, we'd all be unemployed pretty fast.”

Meanwhile, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said they were hoping to launch a new line of attacks. “We labeled the show as sanctimonious. We tried saying that nothing about the show was realistic, that we kept our pencils on the other sides of our desks. But in the end, Sorkin still took us all out behind a woodshed and whacked us on the knees with a chainsaw for an hour. People are going to see this show, realize we suck, and that's the ballgame for us. It isn't fair!”

The organizations are contemplating filing a class-action lawsuit against HBO, claiming the show “libels, defames, and slanders the news media, by showing our audiences just how worthless we are at the jobs we don't fully do.” They go on to explain that their “journalistic integrity is being called into question as well.

For their part, HBO replied to the potential legal battle by paraphrasing a line from Tyrion Lannister, a character on their network's smash hit show “Game of Thrones.” The brief press statement read as follows: “Dear media conglomerates. We here at HBO are not questioning your journalistic integrity. We are denying its existence.”
