Finally! Republicans and Democrats agree on something!

7/3/2012 11:15 AM Marla Jameson - North Carolina Republicans and Democrats made history when they unanimously passed a bill allowing the sale of hard alcohol on Labor Day. The sale of alcohol on holidays is limited to wine and beer in the state, but this Labor Day also marks the unofficial start to the 2012 Democratic National Convention, which Charlotte is hosting this year. This is the first time the state legislature has voted unanimously on anything, and even the "debate" leading up to the vote was cordial. The move is expected to be good for three different groups; Democrats who don't want to attend but feel compelled to and are bitter about it, Republicans forced to face up to the fact that Mitt Romney is about as exciting as stale Cheerios, and local residents whose lives will be turned upside down by the chaos that accompanies any event of this size.

"I have gone to every Democratic convention since I started voting in 1980, but I dunno, I just don't `feel it' this year," said long-time Democratic fundraiser Peter Rugaber. "I mean, some of my friends are upset about it being in North Carolina -- with its anti-union policies, opposition to same sex unions, and whatever else, but I am just not excited about anything this year. First of all, I still support President Obama, but if 2008 was the first 'Matrix' movie, 2012 is either of the other two. It's still decent, but few sequels are as good as the first movie. The only real incentive for me is the big parties we're gonna have. Oh, my favorite summer drink is a G&T, so that `G' had better be flowin' on Labor Day or I am staying home."

Reince Priebus, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, praised the new law -- and the Democrats who supported it -- a rare move as he normally has nothing but contempt for everything they do. "Conventions used to be about selecting nominees from both parties, but they are really just big, lavish parties now. The idea of kicking one off without hard booze, well, it's just not the way these things are done. I am glad the Democrats and Republicans in North Carolina could come together on this important issue. The Democrats deserve to have the same caliber party we're having in Tampa."

Sources close to Priebus told PTP that he can only watch Mitt Romney give a speech if he is totally hammered. "Only Mitt's family can stomach those speeches sober, I don't know how his staff does it. I had more fun last week at a seminar on the tax code than watching any of his speeches."

North Carolina residents admitted they were relieved that the policy was changed for the convention. "We've been through a lot politically this year," said life-long Charlotte resident, Cliff Claven. "I ran into John Edwards one night last year. He was at a bar in downtown Charlotte, drinking his signature white wine and hitting on unsuspecting, attractive women. Between the reminder that he is from here and the crazy influx of who knows what -- Democrats, protesters, random celebrities and their hangers-on -- I plan to spend that week as drunk as possible. It's a little-known fact that people from this town like to drink."
