Boehner tries to re-endorse Romney after saying voters “won't fall in love” with him

7/8/2012 4:15 PM Matt Rock - House Speaker John Boehner made a pretty big gaffe on June 30th, when he told an audience at a West Virginia fundraiser that “the American people probably aren't going to fall in love with Mitt Romney,” and pointing out that most voters “are going to vote for or against Barack Obama” in November.

But earlier today, Boehner put in a noble effort to correct his mistake, offering a re-endorsement of Mitt Romney while speaking at a K Street fundraiser event in Washington DC. Witnesses say that Boehner nearly made Romney sound human while attempting to offer him praise.

“Mitt Romney is incredibly `lifelike.' It really is uncanny,” Boehner explained, using his fingers to offer air quotes as he spoke. “From a distance, you'd think he's flesh and blood. You have to get really, really close to him – uncomfortably close – to spot the wood grain on his `skin,' and to realize his `hair' is actually a solid part of the rest of his `head.' It really is amazing what they can do with mannequins these days, and that, my friends, is American ingenuity at work.”

Boehner teared up as he drew his short speech to an end. “Everyone assumes that Mitt is this boring, out-of-touch millionaire, with bad jokes and no genuine talent. But he really does have talents! Maybe not the sort that could liven up a social gathering, per se, but almost definitely the sort of talents you'd nearly want somewhere in the neighborhood of the White House, sort of. What more can you not really ask for but get anyway, maybe?”
