Obama campaign fashion line moving forward after election
11/23/2012 8:04 PM Matt Rock -
While some pundits may have laughed at the fashion line launched by President Barack Obama's reelection campaign, called “Runway to Win,” the campaign did manage to raise over $40 million from the effort, with designers like Vera Wang, Jason Wu, and Marc Jacobs throwing their efforts into the project. But now that the campaign is over and President Obama has secured his second term, what will happen with the “Runway to Win” clothing line?
“We're going to keep it alive, and use the money we raise to fund the Obama library,” said one former Obama campaign senior staffer. “We're hoping the fashion line's newest products will capture the American way of life, with themes of what it means to be a contemporary American citizen.”
One new item, an evening gown, that the line will launch in December is titled “Party Factory.” It's meant to “pay homage to American manufacturing laborers,” and boasts a bold style of old, dirty newspaper shreds draped over tattered, oil-stained cloth, sewn into a knee-length Hefty bag. The gown comes in a large refrigerator box, which can double as a home if you should happen to lose yours, and is packaged with a wire coat hanger, which you can fashion into a shiv to ward off the other homeless from stealing the dented can of baked beans you found while rummaging through a dumpster behind an abandoned grocery store.
Another item, called “American Ingenuity,” is meant to honor the American couch potato. It features blue polyester pajama pants with little yellow duckies and white and black cows, one gym sock that you're supposed to wear half-off of your left foot, a worn and faded Verizon Wireless t-shirt that doesn't fit you anymore from your days working a retail counter, and an Old Navy sweatshirt given to you as a Christmas present, that you don't wear in public anymore because of the embarrassing mustard stains on the chest. The ensemble is wrapped in a bright orange Snuggy, which also boasts mustard stains.
Runway to Win designers say they'll be working feverishly to develop new entries for the clothing line over the course of the next six to eight months, after which they'll shift their motif to something more somber and depressing. Many note that they'd rather be making outfits for their own clothing lines, but due to the state of unemployment in the country, they don't want to risk giving up the steady paychecks. - Return to Previous Page
