Obama campaign loses money with promotion of Sarah Jessica Parker dinner party

“Sex in the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker is planning on hosting a dinner party and fundraiser for President Obama on June 14th, at her home in New York City. The Obama campaign, hot off the heels of a wildly successful fundraiser at the home of George Clooney, decided to put up a similar contest for the Parker fundraiser, offering supporters a chance to attend the party if they make a donation of $3 or more. But this time around, their celebrity endorsement is blowing up in their faces.
“When George Clooney had his fundraiser, donations were pouring in from Americans, for their chance to win an invitation,” explained Deputy Campaign Manager Julianna Smoot, who sends out an email to Obama supporters every five or six minutes. “But this time around, well, it isn't working the way we were hoping it would.”
The Obama campaign reports that it has thus far lost nearly $3.91 million, since launching the new fundraising effort earlier today. Nearly 700,000 Obama supporters have called, emailed, or otherwise communicated with the campaign, insisting the campaign pay them $3 or more for sending them invitations to Sarah Jessica Parker's home without it being a joke.
“I honestly can't believe the campaign would ask people to donate money for the `chance' to meet someone like her,” said George Clooney. “I mean, when people were donating money for the chance to meet me, that made sense. I'm not cocky, but come on... I'm George fucking Clooney! I'm a gifted, award-winning actor, I'm classy, I'm sophisticated, I don't look like a horse... really, there just isn't a fair comparison to be made here.”
The campaign says they'll still push forward with their fundraising effort. “We'll keep going until we're $10 million or so in the red,” said Smoot. “There has to be some `Sex in the City' fans out there still, right? Still, of all the famous supporters President Obama has, Parker is probably the least-liked, so yeah... we sort of screwed the pooch on this one. Please note that I said `screwed,' not `ate.'
