GOP gets out of hand with “I stand with Cory” campaign, accidentally aligns with Obama
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
5/23/2012 9:01 AM Matt Rock - The GOP launched a petition campaign on Monday, claiming they “stand with” Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker, a popular Democrat, who criticized President Obama's attacks on Bain Capital on Sunday in an interview with “Meet the Press.” Booker has since backed away from his comments, noting that the GOP have been as negative in this election as negativity can get. But this hasn't stopped the GOP's petition campaign, which GOP figures are admitting today has gotten almost comically out of hand.

On Tuesday morning , the GOP's petition drive in “support” of Booker shifted to supporting Hillary Clinton as well, stating that Clinton was driven out of the primary by Obama's negativity. By noon, the campaign shifted yet again, this time supporting Vice President Joe Biden, claiming that Biden was “oppressed” when he stood up for marriage equality, only to be overshadowed soon after by President Obama's endorsement of gay marriage rights.

But Tuesday night, the campaign took its most bizarre twist: it came out in support of President Obama himself. “President Obama has lampooned President Obama on numerous occasions, joking about President Obama's birth certificate and criticizing his ears. Isn't America done with the racist birther BS? President Obama's campaign slogan is `Forward.' Sign this petition to say that you stand with President Obama... let's move `forward' past the offensive, vitriolic rhetoric we've heard from President Obama!”

GOP Chairman Reince Priebus nearly admitted the GOP may have made a slight error. “We ended up driving more than $4 million in campaign donations from Republicans to Obama because of this. I won't say it was a gaffe... the GOP is never, ever, ever wrong in anything we do, ever... but we're definitely ending this campaign now, before this week ends with Mitt Romney endorsing and campaigning for the President.”
