MTV announces new political reality game show
7/31/2011 9:30 AM Matt Rock -
In an effort to further distance themselves from actually playing music videos, Music Television (MTV) announced this morning the launch of a new reality game show, where contestants will be vying for elected office as the “official MTV Party candidate” in the 2012 Presidential election. The show is being developed in conjunction with MTV's Rock the Vote platform, and is slated to begin airing this Fall.
“We wanted to try something different, but without involving any music,” explained the show's executive producer and director, Ivana Ruentivi, 28, of Malibu California. “I think our new show is the perfect attempt at that goal. It's fresh, hip, sexy, revealing, and filmed entirely in New Jersey. We here at MTV believe those are the most important facets of making compelling television. That, and the fact that music videos aren't being shown, though I don't want to sound redundant.”
The new series premier will begin with a casting call, where more than 900,000 contestants, ranging from ages 12 to 50, will sing, dance, and espouse on their political ideologies in front of a special celebrity panel consisting of Gore Vidal, PJ O'Rourke, and "Snookie," who will whittle the list of Presidential hopefuls down to a mere 128 contestants.
“That's where the show really gets interesting,” explained Ruentivi. “Each contestant will need to explain why they should be the next President of the United States in a single Tweet. Viewers can then text their votes for the contestants they like the most, and we'll narrow the list down to 30 contestants by the fourth episode.”
From there, contestants will be required to perform a series of challenges, including an eat-off involving undesirable animal parts, an attempt at performing driving stunts in go karts, a test to see who can run the best lemonade stand, and more. The challenges will occasionally be interrupted by historical and political pop quizzes issued by celebrity special guests, including Paris Hilton, Drew Barrymore, and Sarah Palin, amongst others.
The final four contestants will be asked to deliver a 15-minute speech where they explain why America should vote for them as the next President. As a TV twist, those contestants will need to complete this final challenge while wearing bathing suits, and Andy Dick will be given a feather with which he can tickle those contestants in an attempt to make them laugh. Contestants who sing their speech rather than merely saying it will not be accosted by Dick's feather attempts.
The winner of the new show will get to run for President, with the full popularity of the show backing their play. MTV executives are confident that the winner of the new show will most certainly become the next President, with any Constitutional laws or other issues being “nothing more than tiny roadblocks,” explained Ruentivi. “If our winner is too young to be President, we'll just get the Supreme Court to rule in our favor. They always side with corporations, so I don't think this will be a problem.”
After winning the Presidency, the candidate will then move onto a new show, called “Real World: White House,” where camera crews will follow their every move and capture on film the hardships endured by our political leaders, all while they're occasionally given additional challenges. Of course, the other show will spend those four years grooming new candidates, so the Real World star will need to stay on top of their game if they hope to keep their job as President for another term. - Return to Previous Page
