University of Tampa students, faculty outraged by required RNC course

This August, students at the University of Tampa will be mandated to take a special course based on the Republican National Convention, which will be taking place in their Floridian city from August 27th through August 30th. University officials claim the courses are bi-partisan, designed to teach students why conventions are important and to educate them with regards to safety concerns. But a number of students and staff are saying that early drafts of course materials are rather questionable.
“There's a whole segment of the course dedicated to teaching students how to report socialists and atheists to Rick Scott,” said one outraged faculty member, referencing Florida's Republican Governor. “And there's a three-hour team study where students will be asked to list reasons they hate President Obama, without mentioning that he's black. I don't know who came up with this, but it's a terrible, terrible course.”
One student, a sophomore who will not be forced into taking the class, noted her dismay regarding another course requirement. “They're telling students that if you vote for a Democrat, your grandparents won't get into heaven when they die. My nan is sick... and after hearing about that, so am I.”
However, University of Tampa President Ronald L. Vaughn maintains that the course is bi-partisan, and aimed at supporting free elections. “The State of Florida is world-renowned for how awesome we are at elections. Just look at the 2000 and 2004 presidential races, and Governor Scott's voter purge happening now. We care about these elections. We understand their importance. We care so deeply, in fact, that we're putting in the extra steps to make sure every one of our students votes Republican!” - Return to Previous Page
