Nation mourns breakup of "America's sweethearts"
6/27/2012 9:46 AM Alyson Durden -
The nation's mood suffered another blow this week as Reille Hunter told the media that her fairytale romance with John Edwards is officially over. Hunter told reporters that despite the deep and true love they both feel for each other, the media attention their relationship attracted was just too much.
"We are still very much in love and are a family. I mean, I know I love him. Since he took out that restraining order on me not too long ago, he hasn't actually told me so but I can tell, I feel it in my heart," Hunter told PTP. "As I told Oprah, I was just helping him lead a more honest and thoughtful life. I think that may have been too much for the paparazzi to understand. A love like ours transcends what most people ever experience in their lives. The media are no different, and their blatant jealously of our intense connection is the only explanation for their laser-like focus on our lives. We never talked about it per se, but we often communicated without actually talking. When he said he regretted our relationship, I knew he was just saying he wished it had started sooner. We are just that connected."
Reaction to the news was mixed. Some former supporters admitted they had hoped the conclusion of the former presidential candidate and senator's criminal trial would also end coverage of anything about him. "I worked for John Edwards from 2003-2007 and really thought he was the real deal. As a former staffer, haven't I suffered enough? Isn't it enough that he never hit on me? Am I that unattractive that such a lecherous douchebag, with whom I spent crap loads of time, didn't ever ask me to have sex with him? I mean, I wouldn't have, but it would have been nice to have been asked. I am not just a political operative, I am a woman after all," said Jennifer O'Donnell, who has since left politics for work on the music industry where as she put it "sex with clients is almost expected. Not only is it a nice perk, but it keeps me going back to the gym and on a diet."
Some older supporters were dismayed by the development. Ronald Rotal told PTP, "This is just further proof that we like to build people up to bring them back down. We like to think we support young love, but we don't. The fact that these two, young people -- so clearly in love that he was willing to give up a family and promising political career -- were torn apart by a vulture-like obsession from the media is just sad. Why could't the media just stick to covering Snooki and the Kardashians like we all want them to? The Edwards/Hunter love story is up there with Rhet and Scarlett and Hepburn and Tracy as far as I am concerned. 'Casablanca' had nothing on these two." - Return to Previous Page
