Deleted scene from “Magic Mike” predicted Supreme Court Obamacare ruling

The box office hit “Magic Mike,” which joins the novel “Shades of Grey” in a new trend of porno aimed at women, contained a deleted scene that accurately predicted the Supreme Court's recent decision that the Affordable Care Act, better known as “Obamacare,” is constitutional. PTP sat down with the film's director, Steven Soderbergh, to discuss what audiences may have enjoyed in that lost scene.
“There was a five-minute scene in the second act where the guys are all hanging out back stage, rubbing lotion on each other and slapping each other with towels, and having a debate on the Affordable Care Act,” said Soderbergh, who really isn't gay, and believe us, we sent in Alyson and Frank to check thoroughly, because we're kick-ass journalists. “Channing [Tatum] squirts some lotion on the thighs of Matt [McConaughey], and then he tells everyone that he thinks Chief Justice John Roberts would cross party lines to uphold Obamacare. Then they all laugh and have a pillow fight with lots of banana hammock close-ups and cheek-clenching going on.”
Soderbergh said that he wanted the scene kept in, but the studio fought him on it. “They pointed out that there isn't a single woman on the face of the Earth that can tell you the name of a single character from the movie. Women aren't lining up around the block to see this because of its gripping story, thought-provoking dialog, or romantic plot. They're watching it to get girl boners. Big, funky girl boners. Those theaters are `buzzing' with excitement over said girl boners, too... wink-wink, nudge-nudge.”
In closing, we asked Soderbergh why he felt compelled to make a movie like “Magic Mike.” “I wanted to make a porno movie, but I'm Steven Soderbergh. I made `Traffic' and `Erin Brockovich' and `Oceans Eleven,' and its two sequels, too. I can't turn around and make pornography. So I decided instead to get as close to filming porno as I possibly could. And there were other motivations, too. Why did Willie Sutton rob banks? `Because that's where the money is.' Put another way... it's the money, stupid!” - Return to Previous Page
