House Republicans Vote to Arm Preschoolers
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
6/17/2011 10:52 AM Floyd - In a move certain to fuel debate across the country, House Republicans voted unanimously today to provide every child in America under the age of five with a free .22 caliber handgun. The controversial bill came in the midst of growing disagreement in Washington over whether or not guns can be blamed for deaths resulting from gunshot wounds.

The bill, which was supported by the National Rifleman’s Association and the Lead Advisory Council, passed without receiving a single vote from House Democrats.

House Speaker John Boehner, referring to the, at times, vehement Democratic opposition, expressed frustration with Democrats’ shortly after the vote was taken. Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial while speaking to supporters of the bill, Boehner said, “Where would America be without guns? Would there even be a Lincoln Memorial? This kind of partisan game playing disgusts the American people. When we in Washington can’t come together on a bill that arms children, what hope do we have of reaching compromise on the big issues that affect all Americans? How can we pass a budget that lowers taxes on the rich when we can’t even agree that everyone in this country, rich and poor, should be packing heat from that first precious breath of life?”

In the debate leading up to the final vote on the bill, Republicans argued that arming preschoolers would teach them gun safety from an early age. Democrats, many of whom have advocated stronger gun control laws in the wake of the shootings last January in Arizona, pushed a competing bill that would have allowed children to own guns but would have made it illegal for them to have bullets. Republicans balked at this, baffling Democrats by insisting that a gun without bullets is like anything at all without massive tax cuts.
