Rick Perry's mansion to cost an additional $18 million due to education cuts in Texas

7/12/2012 7:04 AM Matt Rock - Texas Governor and former GOP presidential contender Rick Perry is planning to move back into the Governor's Mansion in the State, after $25 million in renovations have been completed. However, new reports from the Lone Star State show that he mansion still has another $18 million in unfinished renovations, and according to contractors working on the building, those expenses could have been avoided had Perry not slashed the State's education budget.

Perry, who campaigned on the promise of cutting federal spending as well as taxes, reduced spending in Texas by about $15 billion last year. One third of those cuts – $5 billion – came from Texas' education budget. Joseph Hawkins, supervisor of the Texas contractor hired to renovate Perry's mansion, says that those specific cuts led to a number of “pretty big screw-ups,” which in turn nearly doubled the cost of repairs and renovations needed.

“We had a lot of recent high school graduates and dropouts working with our firm to fix up the mansion. And most of these teenagers had just walked out of classrooms where Governor Perry had slashed budgets,” Hawkins explained. “We had kids playing with nail guns, painting the sidewalk instead of the building, and installing roofing tiles in the swimming pool. And don't even get me started on the kids that connected the air conditioning unit to the plumbing in the hopes of making the water cooler. Yeah. This is a real special bunch.”

But however bad the added expenses seem, Perry has been quick to defend the new spending. “Look, I saved $15 billion, and all-told, the Governor's mansion will end up costing, what, something like $40 million? So in the end, I still saved the State... uh... carry the nine... a whole shitload of money! YEE HAW!!! People say that can pay for millions of school lunches. Well I say screw that! I need a swimming pool! You know how hot it gets in Texas? Those kids can bring their lunches to school!”
