Authorities Search for Mysterious "Me" Character in British Phone Hacking Scandal

The British phone hacking scandal that could possibly destroy Rupert Murdoch and his media empire has left authorities searching for a new mysterious character: “me.”
“Me” has left voicemails on all of the hacked voicemail accounts. The typical message is simple: “Hey, it’s me, give me a call back.” Other common messages include, “Hi, it’s me, can you pick up some milk on the way home?” and “Hey, it’s me, want to meet up for dinner tonight?”
British authorities believe that “me” is probably an alias and the messages may be in code.
An unnamed source from Scotland Yard suggested that “me” might be an insider from News Corp. warning people about the hacking. “Me,” however, might be a politician News of the World was trying to investigate.
Although “me” has left messages on all of the hacked voicemail accounts, there is no evidence that this person’s own voicemail account was hacked.
The messages from “me” have come from numerous phone numbers, leading authorities to believe that he or she has used software to disguise the number. In addition, since the person’s voice sounds different on all the messages, authorities believe that he or she may be using software to disguise his or her voice.
“I even got a message from this person,” said one investigator. “She said, ‘Hey, it’s me, will you pick up some cat food while you’re at the store?’ My wife said that she left the message, but I think she might be in on it. I tried to question her about it, but she left in a huff to buy some cat food.” - Return to Previous Page
