NASA accidentally left new rover on Earth, sent up Radio-controlled toy
8/5/2012 3:05 PM Matt Rock -
NASA's newest rover, “Curiosity,” was expected to touch down on Mars later tonight/ tomorrow morning at approximately 1:30 am EST. But now, space agency officials are saying our next robotic exploration of the Red Planet isn't going to happen... because NASA managed to leave their $2.5 billion, 1-ton rover at home.
NASA officials say that the child of one of their engineers had visited the hangar where Curiosity was being stored, and had somehow managed to “borrow” the giant rover, replacing it with his radio-controlled car – a RadioShack truck – without detection. The engineer didn't realize the boy had taken the Curiosity Rover until today, when he caught his son exploring a swampy Florida marshland from his desktop PC.
The news struck as a devastating and embarrassing blow to NASA, who has flown the toy car almost all of the way to Mars already, and can't simply turn around and bring it home. However officials say they might attempt to still conduct some research on Mars using the toy, provided its AA batteries can last long enough to complete some lesser mission. But knowing both the toy and the batteries it uses came from RadioShack, NASA's outlook on even a simple mission is reportedly grim. - Return to Previous Page
