Santorum rakes in $277.30 in one day

Rick Santorum has shattered all of his campaign’s previous fundraising records by bringing in an astonishing $277.30 in just 24 hours. A source close to the campaign confirmed that Santorum raised the money during a major push yesterday to reach out in person to potential donors – an effort that included the candidate himself going door to door in neighborhoods all across his home state of Pennsylvania asking for donations of “as little as $20 million, or whatever hard-working people can afford”.
Reporters covering the Santorum campaign were treated to a rare glimpse of Santorum’s patented fundraising magic when they were invited to tag along with the candidate as he rang doorbells in working class neighborhoods just outside Philadelphia. At one such house, Santorum was greeted at the door by a homeowner who didn’t know who the former Pennsylvania Senator was. The disheveled looking man, Otto Chutney, an unemployed steel worker whose wife recently left him, gave Santorum 83 cents he found in the pocket of his robe because, “He seems so sad and pathetic, I figure he needs the money more than I do. What was that guy’s name again?”
After spending the day pounding the pavement, a tired but ebullient Santorum sat down with reporters for a cup of coffee at a local Starbucks and held an impromptu press conference during which he praised the generosity of “regular losers who are willing to give their hard-earned unemployment money to a candidate who understands sort of exactly what they’re going through.”
The day ended on a down note for Santorum when he realized that reporters had charged their lattes, mochas and cappuccinos to him. The result was a net loss for the day of $16.23, though some of that may have been offset when a campaign worker reached into the tip jar next to the cash register and made off with a handful of coins. - Return to Previous Page
