White House petition site created as practical joke, sources say

Sources inside the Obama Administration revealed today that the White House website's “We the People” service, which allows citizens to freely create petitions which will get official responses if they gather enough signatures, is actually nothing more than a practical joke, made more as an experiment to see “just how crazy and idiotic” the most popular petitions can be.
“We created the `We the People' service mostly as a gag. We wanted to see how dumb the most popular petitions were, because reading them takes the edge off difficult government work,” said one of our sources in the West Wing. “I mean seriously, have you read those petitions? Some of them have really good ideas, but most of those petitions are redonkulous, and I don't use that word lightly!”
Of the top 20 petitions on the site, five are directly related to the Westboro Baptist church, three are secessionist pleas asking for States to be granted the right to withdraw from the Union, three are related to the legalization of marijuana, and most of the rest are nonsensical, like a request to ban insulting the prophets of major religions, calls for the impeachment of President Obama and for a recount of the presidential election, and one calling for the deportation of Piers Morgan “for attacking 2nd amendment,” which isn't really a sentence.
“Most of the petitions are hilarious so far,” another source explained. “There's one demanding we build a Death Star, like in the Star Wars movies. Another one wants us to deport everyone that signed a petition asking for their state to secede. Another one asks us to `make petitioning funerals illegal.' Surely they meant to say `protest,' but yeah... that shows you how successful the petition site is. It's the most hilarious collection of nonsense this side of Reddit!” - Return to Previous Page
