Republicans announce raffles to exploit national tragedies

The Republican Party knows a good idea when they see one.
After Arizona Republicans raised money to field a candidate to oppose Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords by raffling off a handgun similar to the one used to wound Giffords and kill 6 others, the Republican National Committee announced they will expand on the idea by holding raffles to exploit other national tragedies.
In an email to PTP and other major media outlets, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus listed raffles the RNC plans to hold in the near future – among them, a raffle for a pair of black trench coats to commemorate the Columbine High School shootings, a raffle for 5,000 pounds of ammonia nitrate and 4 gallons of diesel fuel to commemorate the Oklahoma City bombing, and a raffle for a full year of free shipping to commemorate the Unabomber’s work “to get the Federal government off our backs.”
When families of victims of each of these horrific events flooded RNC phone lines with calls condemning the raffles as insensitive, Charman Priebus had little sympathy for their concerns. “Of course we’re being insensitive. Hello! We’re the Republican Party, remember? We’re the guys who like to screw poor people, torture prisoners and bite the heads off live flamingoes, so don’t come crying to us just because you lost a loved one or two. We have bigger fish to fry. Speaking of which, we’re planning to raffle off a bigger fish to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic. I happen to have a roll of tickets right here, just ten bucks a pop. How many do you want?” - Return to Previous Page
