Gingrich Blames Neighbor's Kid for Medicare Mix-Up
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
5/20/2011 10:43 PM Floyd - Stung by the intense criticism leveled at his characterization of Republican Congressman Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan as “right-wing social engineering” Newt Gingrich yesterday tried to put the controversy behind him by insisting that the plan he had referred to was not Paul Ryan’s at all. In an interview with conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh, Gingrich said that the plan he criticized last Sunday on Meet the Press was one developed by his next-door neighbor’s daughter as part of an extra credit assignment for her fifth grade class.

Gingrich blamed the mix-up on Meet the Press host David Gregory, saying Gregory should have clarified his question about Ryan’s plan by “making sure that I knew he was referring to the Paul Ryan who is the head of the House Budget Committee and not that kid Stacey who wears braces and rides a skateboard around the neighborhood. That kid is a right wing nut job who exemplifies everything that is wrong with America, which is surprising, considering the fact that her mom has totally got it going on.”

Limbaugh suggested that if 10 year-old Stacey was the architect of the plan that has drawn Gingrich’s ire it might seem strange to some that, earlier in the week, Gingrich apologized to Representative Ryan. Gingrich responded by acknowledging that “I can see how some people might be confused but it’s important to remember that, whatever I have said in the past, the words coming out of my mouth right now are the words people should believe.”

This seemed to satisfy Limbaugh who urged his listening audience to dial down the anti-Gingrich rhetoric and “take a chill pill”. Limbaugh quickly followed up his admonition by reminding listeners, “If anybody has any extra chill pills they don’t need, I’ll be happy to take them off your hands.”

When asked to comment on this story, Stacey denied ever having come up with a Medicare plan but suggested people check out her “Vision for a Better America” blog where she recently posted her foreign policy plan in an attempt to encourage serious debate among her school mates. She expressed dismay that she was being picked on by “that doughy man who lives next door” and suggested that Gingrich “stop coming over to borrow a cup of sugar from my mom every fifteen minutes.”
