Louisiana develops new water-centric tourism program

7/6/2011 3:25 PM Coyle - In the aftermath of historic flooding that has inundated states along the Mississippi River, Louisiana has adopted a new advertising campaign designed to promote tourism in a state that has been ravaged by natural disasters over the past several years.

With the new slogan “Louisiana is for Water Sports,” the state tourism board is trying to attract lovers of the outdoors to the state to partake in the numerous opportunities for boating, kayaking, jet skiing and fishing.

“In the past month, we've opened up nearly 300,000 acres of farm land to new water development,” said Alana Cooper, the chairman of the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association. “It's a great time for those who love water recreation to come on down to Louisiana for a bit.”

Tourists further rejoiced in May, when the U.S Army Corps of Engineers opened up the Morganza Spillway, which added even more areas for water-based tourism. State officials have pointed out that this program is essential to regrowing Louisiana's economy.

“Given everything that has happened in this state, it's a wonder that we still have an economy at all,” said Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. “We're really hoping that this new program works, because we're truly scraping the bottom of the barrel here. At least it can't be worse than our last idea.”

Governor Jindal was referring to the ill-fated campaign last year that tried to spur tourism after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Known as the “Be Your Own Oil Company” program, tourists were given free buckets and skimmers to collect oil along the Louisiana coastline.

“We thought that, given the high gas prices at the time, people would flock down here to collect their own oil,” continued Governor Jindal. “The stuff was just floating all over the place. People travel all the time to pick their own apples and strawberries, but apparently we were just ahead of our time.”
