Kathy Hochul Victory Causes Gingrich to Reverses Position Again
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
5/26/2011 2:30 PM Coyle - After a shocking electoral defeat in upstate New York, where Democrat Kathy Hochul used voter angst over Republican proposals to change the Medicare system to win a House seat in a traditionally conservative congressional district, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich again changed his mind on the budget plan of Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan, claiming that it would be wrong for the American people.

“I don't think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering,” argued Gingrich in an interview this afternoon. “What we need more of in this great country is Gingrich-wing social engineering.”

When asked what “Gingrich-wing social engineering” would actually entail, the former Speaker of the House responded, “I will let you know once I see the latest poll numbers.”

This shift would represent the second time in two weeks that Gingrich has changed his opinion on the issue of the budget deficit. Last Sunday, Gingrich appeared to come out against Paul Ryan's proposed changes to Medicare while being interviewed by David Gregory on “Meet the Press.” However, he reversed his position the next day after receiving much negative press from conservative media outlets.

Attempting to preempt criticism about his vacillation on the issue, Gingrich said, “Any ad which quotes what I said on Monday, when I said that any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood, is a falsehood.”

When asked to respond, Congressman Ryan clearly demonstrated his frustration with Gingrich. “Unfortunately, it does not appear that Mr. Gingrich has the leadership qualities necessary to be the next President of the United States. Leadership is not about kowtowing to some special interest group like the American people. Leadership is about shoving legislation down people's throats no matter how much they may hate it, just like a little child who doesn't want to eat his vegetables.”
