Wikipedia to join anti- SOPA blackouts; students worried about homework
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
1/17/2012 3:05 PM Matt Rock - In protest of the “Stop Online Piracy Act,” better known as SOPA, Wikipedia has announced that they'll be shutting down for 24 hours on Wednesday, January 18th 2012. The site is closing its doors as a part of an ever-growing blackout in protest of the controversial bill, with internet giants like Reddit, Tucows, Wordpress, Moveon.org, Mozilla, the popular “Minecraft” game, and the icanhazcheezburger network of comedy sites joining an almost endless list of other participants in refusing service that day.

“Wikipedia will be hurt by this legislation, like so many other websites will,” explained chewy_321, a “Wikipedian” who contributes to updating the site. “It's nearly impossible to list all of the ways SOPA is going to hurt the Wiki community, and that trickles down to all of the other sites and businesses that rely on Wiki daily. It hurts social networking sites like Twitter, too. And if Sarah Palin can't tweet stupid crap, I don't know how a site like PTP can stay afloat.”

But the blackouts aren't getting support from everyone. “Seriously? Wikipedia is shutting down? Crap in a doughnut!” said Tommy J. Wayne, a 15-year old high school student from Modesto, California. “Dude, I've got a huge paper on the Roman Empire due this Friday! How am I going to get it done without Wikipedia?! Do `you' know anything at all about Marcus Aurelius? Anything?!”

We pointed Tommy toward a book on the subject, but he just rolled his eyes. “I tried that already, noob! You can't plug a mouse into one of those, and it doesn't have search, and the screen is froze! Do you have one that isn't broken? Or do you like, know the tech support number? It's probably the drivers. F-M-L!”
