Gingrich switches stance on birth control mandate, explains why he now favors it

2/8/2012 8:05 PM Matt Rock - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich became the first GOP presidential primary contestant to openly endorse the Obama Administration's regulation that requires all health insurance providers, including disapproving Catholic groups, to provide coverage for birth control and other women's health services, while speaking earlier this afternoon at a campaign event in Ohio.

“I want to make it absolutely clear that I think the Obama administration went about this the wrong way,” said Gingrich, who munched on a ham sandwich while speaking with supporters in Cleveland. “But the regulation itself is a good idea. Birth control plays an important role in modern society, and I've come to the realization that more women should have access to it.”

Gingrich paused, moving in on a bag of potato chips before continuing. “I know it's not a popular thing to say, my being a Republican candidate and all. But it really does play into my whole moon colony idea. If people are having unprotected sex on the moon, they'll make, well, moon babies. And if the moon doesn't become the 51st State, as I've championed, then they won't just be aliens... they'll be illegal aliens!”

“Of course, there's more to it than just that,” Gingrich explained as he finished off his lunch with a cupcake. “You have to realize that contraceptives make things possible for people, and I'm not just talking about preventing pregnancies, but all the excellent things preventing pregnancies can lead to. I mean, if it weren't for rubbers, inauguration day would roll around, and I'd probably have kids in Iowa, New Hampshire, Florida, Nevada, Colorado, and Minnesota. Especially Nevada!”
