Want to know how serious a situation is? Check the female news staff's appearance

2/26/2012 8:05 PM Alyson Durden - Not sure that breaking news story is something that should worry you? Looking for a color-coded system to gauge how panicked you should be? Apparently, all three main news networks have your back. A new Pew report shows that they use their female staff in subtle ways to indicate how bad a threat may be. CNN relies on necklace sizes, for FOX News it's lipstick, and MSNBC uses condescension.

FOX News was the most forthcoming about their use of makeup to convey the need for caution. "I don't know how often you watch Megyn Kelly, but as beautiful as she is, we felt that the best way we can make people pay attention -- real attention -- to what she is saying is to apply as much lipstick as possible on days when we really want to scare the viewers," said FOX spokesperson, Alice King. "For instance, when Obama apologized for US troops burning the Koran, all we needed was some lip balm for Megyn, but when he was going to make the Catholic church provide contraception for its employees? Fire engine red."

The other networks were less willing to admit their policies. CNN told us that the size of the necklaces worn by their anchors and reporters had nothing to do with anything but their own personal style. "We never tell people who appear on our shows what to wear. If they happen to wear necklaces that are so heavy they can barely sit up -- and let's face it, some wear jewelry that weighs more than they do -- during really critical stories, well, that is just a coincidence."

MSNBC seemed oblivious to just how condescending their anchors are, "Look, we are clearly just trying to make the world a better, more just place and if we can use our superior intellect to do that, we will."
