“Ron Paul Fever” sweeps through country music industry
2/28/2012 3:05 PM Matt Rock -
Ron Paul may not have a hope or a prayer when it comes to winning the GOP primary, but his cult-like followers, who are the only people on Earth that believe he'll actually win, are getting a peculiar form of help from a very unlikely source: the country music industry. In the past month, no fewer than eighteen country music stars have written songs about Ron Paul, some of them quickly climbing the charts and affording Paul new, untapped outlets for his ideas.
“Country music is all about melancholy,” said country star Toby Keith, whose hit song “The Ballad of Ron Paul” is the #1 country hit in the nation right now. “Every country album has one song about falling in love, three about breaking up, two about dogs and/ or pickup trucks, and the rest are usually about how sad we are about all of the above. And if you want to throw in a song about how kick-ass America is, then dude, go for it, nobody will try to stop you. Ron Paul fits into that `sad' category, and whoa Nelly, does he pay the bills!”
Taylor Swift, who wrote the hit song “Ron Paul makes me giggle, and so does everything else,” chimed in on the subject as well, in a recent Rolling Stone interview. “He might not be a good candidate for the White House, but he's a perfect candidate for country music. He has absolutely no chance of winning the GOP primary, or the general election against President Obama for that matter, but he keeps trying and failing, trying and failing, trying and failing... he's like a case study in country music characterization!”
Musicians in other genres of music have also floated the idea of writing songs about Ron Paul, though they haven't done so yet. “Grunge was far more depressing than country,” said Foo Fighters front-man Dave Grohl, who was formerly the drummer of 90's grunge sensation Nirvana. “if Ron Paul were making waves back then, we probably would have written a semi-suicidal song about it. And it's amazing to me that goth and emo bands haven't used Ron Paul as an excuse to cry. I mean, they cry about everything else, you know?” - Return to Previous Page
