Newt to appear in A&E's "Intervention"
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
3/30/2012 7:05 AM Alyson Durden - Everyone seems to know that Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign is over, except for Newt himself. In perhaps the saddest announcement in what has been an excruciatingly sad year, the Arts and Entertainment (A&E) channel released its episode list for the upcoming "Intervention" series, and the de-facto former presidential candidate's episode will air third, just behind a binge-Dorito eater and a heroin addict. The premise of the show is that they approach an addict with the idea that they are doing a special on addiction and want the person's help in doing it. The participants are not told that they will face an actual intervention during the show. Newt's addiction -- to himself or to running for president -- was not revealed. Representatives from the cable channel said we would have to wait and watch.

"Our goal at A&E is not to step on our own story like that. Would you be interested in the Dorito guy if you knew what the former speaker is going to do in two episodes? Doubt it," said Kellee Elkins, VP of Communications. "We will tell you that we taped the show in February and March and got some great footage of the campaign, when there was one. We wanted to do a follow-up but were told no other public events were on the schedule."

Sources close to Newt and Callista Gingrich told us that the intervention was "one of the most emotional and bizarre events ever" and that "Newt had no idea it was coming." Not only were his friends and family there, but former political colleagues sent in video testimonials of how the former Speaker is just hurting himself by continuing to run. One said, "Newt, I know you need money, what with that ginourmous Tiffany bill you've got, but this is no way to sell books. Take some time with Callista, write another book. Give a thousand more lectures on whatever. Just stop pretending to run for president. We all know your campaign is over and worse, we know you know. Please stop."
