Shocking! US news media real force behind Santorum and Gingrich campaigns
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
4/13/2012 10:44 AM Alyson Durden - The major news networks were revealed to be the real funders for both Rick Santorum's and Newt Gingrich's campaign. Emails leaked to Politico show that they banded together in 2011 to pool their resources and fund the unlikely candidates to prolong the GOP primary process to increase interest and ratings for their political programming. This is the first time since the Spanish-American War that the press has so overtly influenced national events.

One of the emails from FOX News reads, "Now that we have lost the strong draw of hosts like Glenn Beck we need to find a way to gin up the interest in the campaign to bring viewers back." A response from MSNBC, "We feel your pain. We put on a brave face when Keith (Olbermann) left but it really hit us all hard. We're all in."

The networks pooled together a whopping $500 million for the project. MSNBC and FOX News put up most of the money. CNN contributed the least of the three, mostly because no one ever watches the channel and the average price for a commercial on the network is about $4.37.

The outlets refused to answer questions about the controversy but a former MSNBC producer told us, "Normally, no one cares at all about politics. It's really boring to most people. Let's face it, everyone knew Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann weren't going to stay in the race very long but Santorum and Gingrich are both known for their giant egos. Keeping them in the race longer could only be a good thing for the political talk shows. No one wanted to watch a year of Mitt Romney. MSNBC and FOX News make a big show of being polar opposites but they really have a lot in common. Like two sides of a coin, one cannot really exist without the other."
