Critics blast phone hacking scandal coming to US, say it won't be as interesting as UK scandal
Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook Facebook
4/20/2012 3:12 PM Matt Rock - The nefarious British phone hacking scandal, where News Corp employees were spying on politicians and celebrities by hacking into cell phones, is reportedly coming to the United States, with the company's American holdings, like Fox News and the New York Post, coming under scrutiny as the firm lawyers up on this side of the pond. But many analysts claim that Americans shouldn't be worried about the scandal dominating news cycles in the US, because quite frankly, our version won't nearly be as good.

“Let's face it. Americans never get it quite right,” said one critic. “Just look at television shows. Top Gear is the most blatantly-terrible spinoff, but you also have X Factor, Life on Mars, Top Gear Antiques Roadshow, American Gladiators, Top Gear, Survivor, Top Gear Little Britain, Three's a Crowd, Top Gear... I think the only example of it actually working is `the Office,' actually. So my expectations for this scandal are incredibly low. Also, did I mention how terrible the American version of Top Gear is compared to the original? Yeah... it's as low as it gets.”

Another critic used music as an example. “Rock and roll is a perfect way to look at it. The Beatles versus the Monkees. Radiohead versus the Smashing Pumpkins. Led Zeppelin versus Journey, or The Who versus the Grateful Dead, or Queen versus Styx... In each instance, the British band was way, way, way more famous globally, and unfathomably more talented, and unquestionably more influential, than their American counterpart. Crushingly so, in fact.”

News Corporation CEO Rupert Murdoch disagrees with all of the criticism of the upcoming American version of his company's scandal, however. “It's going to be a great scandal. You'll fall in love with some of the characters, you'll have the rest, and you'll check your own phone to see if you've been hacked, even if you aren't famous. Don't listen to the naysayers that are claiming our scandal won't be as good in the US. Haters gonna hate!”
